KARACHI: The vote count for the by-election for National Assembly constituency NA-249 Karachi West-II is underway after polling concluded at 5pm.
According to unofficial and unconfirmed results from 58 polling stations, this is how the candidates currently stand:
- Miftah Ismail (PML-N) – 5,389 votes
- Qadir Khan (PPP) – 4,017 votes
- Nazeer Kamalvi (Proscribed TLP) – 2,364 votes
- Mustafa Kamal (PSP) – 1,723 votes
- Amjad Afridi (PTI) – 1,690 votes
The Election Commission had made all necessary arrangements to hold the elections in peaceful manner. The polling started at 8am and continued till 5pm without any break.
According to sources, presiding officers had been directed that pictures of Form-45 be sent to returning officers in presence of polling agents of contesting candidates.
A tough contest is predicted between the candidates of PPP and PML-N while the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) is not expected to retain the seat.
Amjad Afridi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Miftah Ismail of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Qadir Khan Madokhel of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Mustafa Kamal of Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) and Mohammad Mursaleen of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) are among the 30 candidates taking part in the by-election.
There are 339,591 registered voters in the constituency out of which 201,656 are male and 137,935 are female voters who exercised their right of vote today.
Al least 276 polling stations had been established in the constituency out of which 184 were declared highly sensitive while 92 polling stations were declared sensitive.
Polling time ended at 5pm on for the hotly-contested NA-249 by-election in the city’s District West and counting is underway across the 276 polling stations in the constituency.
Earlier, taking strict notice of PTI lawmakers’ presence in the NA-249 constituency during the by-poll, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) directed them to leave.
According to details, six PTI MPs Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Raja Azhar, Saeed Afridi, Bilal Ghaffar, Shah Nawaz Jadoon and Shahzad Awan were found to be violating the code of conduct by being present in the constituency during polling hours.
The ECP has issued their expulsion orders, directing police to expel them from the constituency.
Meanwhile, PPP raised the issue of the presence of PTI’s Saeed Afridi in the constituency by writing to the Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, requesting him to take action against the MPA who was campaigning for his party’s candidate.
“It is obvious that PTI legislatures have made it a policy and a routine to violate election laws and their removal from the constituency is not producing any result. One goes and another enters,” PPP’s Taj Haider wrote to the CEC.
“We humbly request you to warn the party in this regard and take penal action under the law against those legislators who have violated Election Law.”
