NEW YORK: Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, voiced strong concerns over India’s recent actions during an in-camera session of the UN Security Council convened at Pakistan’s request.
During the closed-door briefing, attended by the 15-member council including five permanent members, Asim Iftikhar highlighted a range of pressing issues, particularly the deteriorating situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir and the alleged unilateral actions by New Delhi that threaten regional stability.
Calling Kashmir the “core dispute between Pakistan and India,” Iftikhar emphasized that the issue remains unresolved even after more than 70 years.
“The Kashmiri people are still waiting for justice and should have the right to decide their future,” he said, calling for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions to ensure lasting peace in South Asia. “The Kashmir issue should be resolved according to the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.”
He condemned the continued human rights violations and Indian atrocities in the region, saying these actions not only violate international law but also pose a serious threat to regional peace and security.
Iftikhar categorically denied Pakistan’s involvement in the recent Palgham attack, which India has attempted to link to Islamabad. “We strongly condemn the Palgham incident, but Pakistan has no connection to it whatsoever,” he stated.
He said Pakistan would welcome a “transparent and independent international investigation” into the matter, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to truth and justice.
Another major point of concern raised by the Pakistani envoy was India’s move to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. Iftikhar termed it a “violation of international law” and said Pakistan has serious reservations over this step.
“The treaty is a symbol of cooperation and must be honored in letter and spirit,” he remarked.
Highlighting Pakistan’s efforts in the fight against terrorism, Asim Iftikhar reminded the council of the country’s sacrifices.
“Pakistan has been on the frontline in the war against terrorism, with over 90,000 lives lost,” he stated.
He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace in the region, emphasizing that dialogue remains the only viable path forward. He said Paksitan wanted to resolve all issues with the regional countries through negotiations.
“We are fully prepared to defend our territorial integrity but seek solutions through talks based on mutual respect,” he added.
The Pakistani envoy expressed gratitude for the participation and engagement of the Security Council members. “We are thankful for the attention the council has paid to these critical issues,” Iftikhar said, hoping for continued international support for a peaceful resolution of regional disputes.
