Senior journalist Khurrum Baig loses battle against Covid-19

ISLAMABAD: Another journalist, Khurrum Baig on Thursday lost battle against Covid-19 in Karachi leaving his family and friends to grieve the untimely demise.

Khurram Baig, 49, worked with many leading media outlets of Pakistan in different capacities. He was being treated in a hospital in Karachi after he developed Covid-19 complication but could not survive.

Baig started journalistic career with Pakistan Press International (PPI) once a leading private sector news agency of the country. He served as City Editor (Karachi) at The News International, Sports Editor, and anchor sports shows and news bulletins with DawnNews TV, then an English language channel.

He was part of launching team of The Express Tribune and remained associated with it till 2013 as Business Editor.

“Khurram Baig was a wonderful person to work with. In many ways, he was a perfectionist. Always trying to raise the standard,” Express Tribune quoted its former editor Kamal Siddiqi as saying.

“It was hard work of Khurram Baig during initial year of The Express Tribune that has today made Business Pages of the newspaper as one of the most read section. We will miss him always,” were the comments of Shahbaz Rana an eminent business reporter and anchor of a TV show at Express News.

A through professional and soft spoken Baig has behind a wife and three sons besides dozens of friends, current and former colleagues in media industry and social circles to mourn his death.

“Khurram Baig Shb was my City Editor at the News in 2005. He was such a great person,” remarked Qadeer Tanoli who has worked with The News International and The Express Tribune.

News of yet another journalist losing battle against Covid-19 grieved journalist community in Karachi and Islamabad and other cities. Many prominent journalists in Pakistan have fallen victim to the deadly virus which has killed more than 16,000 people in the country so far.

“What a brilliant soul he was. This Covid is too deadly,” were the remarks of Riaz ul Haq, a senior reporter with Dawn TV.

Pakistan reported 5,480 new cases of the virus infection and 151 new deaths during last 24 hours.

Federal and Provincial governments are making efforts to impose restrictions of closure of markets and banning commercial activities but the infections and fatalities by COVID-19 are surging, with most people taking it too causal.

It is being feared that Coronavirus third wave can turn more deadly in the coming weeks if country failed to check the ever increasing graph of cases.

Government has deployed the Army personnel to assist police and other law enforcement agencies in an effort implement Coronavirus standard operating procedures (SOPs).
