MEXICO: A Canadian tourist was shot dead and 13 others were injured after a gunman opened fire on tourists at Mexico’s popular Teotihuacan pyramids archaeological and tourist site, authorities said.
Authorities said the attacker, whose identity and nationality remain unknown, took his life following assaulting the sprawling pre-Hispanic site, located roughly 50 kilometres from the Mexico.
In a post on X, Mexico State Governor Delfina Gomez Alvarez said, “care is being provided to the people who were affected, and the presence of elements from the state Secretariat of Security will be maintained.”
The incident unfolded at the Pyramid of the Moon, a prominent structure mostly climbed by visitors for its panoramic views.
Cristobal Castaneda, the security secretary for the State of Mexico, said that six individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, including a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and child, a Brazilian and two Americans.
In past years, staff at the archaeological site carried out security scans before people entered the area, but have since stopped.
According to tourism officials, more than 2,000 years old, the pyramid city near Mexico City attracted over 1.8 million visitors in 2025.
Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand called it “a horrific act of gun violence,” in an X post.
Later, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep sorrow and ordered a thorough investigation, confirming that additional personnel had been dispatched to assist at the site.
“What happened today in Teotihuacan deeply pains us,” Sheinbaum said, pledging full support for victims and their families.
